Mifepristone is known as The Abortion Pill. Many people get confused as to which pill is The Abortion Pill for good reason.
The Abortion Pill is not the same thing as The Morning After Pill
The Morning After Pill is a generic term for several kinds of hormonal combinations that can prevent pregnancy when taken within a short time prior to possible conception, or unprotected sex. This is typically sex during the middle of the cycle when the women is most likely to be ovulating.
The Morning After Pill is not The Abortion Pill. However some anti abortion groups have cited literature, or inferred by possible mechanism, a way the Morning After Pill could be an abortifacient.
The Abortion Pill has several other names. It is also called Mifepristone which is the generic name of the molecule. This same molecule has also been known as RU486. Mifepristone is branded as Mifeprex. These are all the same molecule, mifepristone, and is used for as an abortion pill for the induction of a medical abortion.
Misoprostol is another molecule that is confused with Mifepristone. Misoprostal is often given several days after Mifepristone to assist in the Medical Abortion. Misoprostal is different than Mifepristone.
Methotrexate is an entirely different medicine. All these medicines begin with the letter "m" so they get confusing. Methotrexate can also be used to induce a medical abortion. Methotrexate has been used as a shot and as a pill. Despite this, most people, when they think of The Abortion Pill, are still thinking about Mifepristone.
Methergine is another medicine that begins with the letter "m". It is often given after an abortion. It helps the uterus contract so there is diminished blood loss. Methergine is not The Abortion Pill. |
